Tracking a Moving Target

Known as GPS for the Body® , Calypso’s technology continuously tracks the position of targeted tissue by using radiofrequency waves. The Calypso® 4D Localization System is the only technology platform designed to provide objective, accurate and continuous tracking information during external beam radiation therapy without adding carcinogenic ionizing radiation.

Organ motion is prevalent, variable and unpredictable during radiation therapy. It presents challenges to delivering precise external beam radiation to the prostate or prostate bed. Normal physiologic events such as digestion, breathing or coughing cause organs to move. Continuously tracking the tumor position during radiation treatment allows clinicians to target the radiation beam, avoiding surrounding healthy tissues and organs, which can reduce common side effects including incontinence and impotence.

Cleared by the FDA, the Calypso System detects the slightest tumor movement in real-time so extremely accurate radiation therapy can be delivered. If necessary, the therapist can pause treatment to re-adjust the patient thereby ensuring that radiation therapy is focused on the tumor, avoiding healthy surrounding tissue. This optimizes treatment by ensuring patients are in the correct position throughout their radiation treatment. Clinician confidence is enhanced through accurate sub-millimeter electromagnetic localization accuracy.¹
